Guide Camp

The school Guide company (3rd Gaaf Alif) is having and indoor camp in the school campus. The 2 day camp is going to help the sudents for their further developments and also through this camp they will have a good experience of outdoor life, work in groups and learn values and etiquette through the guide law.

In-charge teacher Leader Neeza Zahir will guide them, assisted by many teachers. The guiders pitched their tents in the school compound with the help of their parents they were able to learn a lot of skills of putting up these kinds of tents. Later they prepared their gadgets (by stick and rope) and was great work.

They were dreaming about sleeping in their tents for the first time, unfortunately there was an unexpected heavy downpour and the guiders have to be moved to a classroom.

The two day camp will end on 29th October.

The battle for streams

As the second Term Test is around the corner, the students of grade 7 must be made aware about the streams they should choose when they begin their secondary education. Like many other schools, here in GA Atoll School we have two streams Science and Business. The question asked by many parents and students is which stream is better? Science or Business?

Many years ago when secondary education was not very common in Maldives, we had a practice of winning and giving the streams. Those who pass well in exams win the science stream and the rest will be given Commerce (then). Therefore, it was believed by many, that science stream is for bright students and business is for average and lower achievers.

By choosing Business, the students can lay their foundations for the management careers, accounting, commerce or economics degrees. These are high earning jobs which are reputable in the society. Those who wish to go on with medicine, Engineering and other vocational and technical careers, science is the option.

So when these professions have equal importance and earnings why going only for science?
Some students have natural talents for certain professions. Many boys like to go on with vocational and technical jobs while, many girls like business, management and  and Doctors and Nursing jobs!

Offering streams for about a 30 likely students in grade 7 on their own wish is not going to work very well. This concept of 'science good...  Business boring' is curved and fossilized in parents minds and if option is given, everyone will go for science and that leaves no one to do Business subjects. Maybe few could be there but it would not be a number required for a Biz class!

So choose a profession that suits you. Your teachers will guide you through the career guidance program! Good luck !
