History

Briefly, the history

GA. Atoll School came into being in 1985 with a modern building. The school was officially declared open on 12th December 1984.  Although this date is acknowledged as the date of establishment, the school had been running under various names.  Maktabatul Saada and Kolamaafushi primary school (KPS) were some of the predecessor names by which the school was known before. The school had been running under the roof of old building, "Ashige" as it was famously known (where present day Kolamaafushi office is located).

The first principal (Naazir) of the school was late Mohamed Saeed, (then Katheeb), who had rendered valuable services to the island and the school.

In 1985, with the opening of  new building donated by the Japanese government, (the so-called Japaanu School) the school adopted to the newly prescribed National curriculum and the syllabuses. There were 3 new teachers who had completed their teacher training program. They were, Mohamed Ismail, Ahmed Mujthaba and Moomina Saeed. The school was headed by Ismail Habeeb, who became the first assistant headmaster.

In 1986, primary teacher Aminath Shaheeda joined the School while in 1987, primary teacher, Habeeb Zahir began his services at the school.

In 1987, primary teacher Easa Adam from Lh.Hinnavaru was the acting in-charge of the school. In 1988, Abdulla Shareef became the assistant headmaster of the school and the year was marked by the first appearance by the school at national level. The SP C class students sat in the JSC (Junior School Certificate) examinations conducted by the Ministry of Education.

1989 saw the first trained headmaster of the school Mohamed Solih Ahmed of S.Hithadhoo. For the first time, general science and Arabic Language were introduced in this year.

In 1990, the first expatriate English Teacher Mr. Neil Girihagama of Srilanka joined the school. Since then expatriate teachers served in teaching various subjects.

In 1993 and 1994, first attempts were made to achieve secondary education in the school. Bearing that in mind, the previous grade 7 students were retained in the school in another class as Pre-8. However at the end of the year it was understood that grade 8 would not be formed, and all students of the Pre-8 grade left the school.

In 1995, there was a tragic incident of suicide by an expatriate teacher (Mr. Vaas) in his room.

In 1997, finally  the school had the permission and teachers to start grade 8, after a large number of students passed in the grade 8 entrance exam. Since then in 1998 grade 9 was formed and in 1999 the first batch of grade 10 students sat in the London GCE O level 2000 January exam.

In the year 2000, the school had the permission to start science stream and thereafter, more students opted for science stream. The first batch of science stream students sat in the January 2003 London GCE Exam.

In 2003, the school had achieved a very successful program of developing physical infrastructure with the full support of the parents and the wider community. Under the leadership of Abdulla Rasheed (the Acting Assistant Principal then) the parents, teachers and the whole community joined hands to build a new wing of 3 classroom and a computer lab and the laboratory. The construction was over within a very short period of time and the students started using the new facilities as soon as possible.

Even with those physical infrastructure, the school was not able to prepare the students for their post school future. Most of the students had been failing in GCE exams with only very few students passing in 5 subjects and promoting to grade 11.

However it was in 2007, the school had secured its place in the National top 10 list. Four Students received the 'Top Achievers Award' making history.

The following year, 2008 marked another great achievement with 5 students in the top achievers list. In
2009, for the first time there was a student in the national top ten first place, Suha Saleem.

In 2011, the school again made history by achieving the school Achievement Award by winning 63.3% in the o level exam.
